Five Lessons I Learned Training for Tough Mudder

I was clinging by my fingers and toes to a gravel covered ski slope called The Cliffhanger when I started weeping. I was only halfway through one of the biggest challenges of my life, Tough Mudder 2012. A 10-mile race with 21 obstacles that have been designed by British Special Forces. I couldn't do this. I was crazy for trying. All I could think was

“I am so outta of my league.”

I wept for a few seconds then started choking on dust and lack of oxygen. We were at 6,800 ft altitude on the side of a mountain. Normally, I live at 16 ft altitude 8 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I reminded myself: don't cry—breathe.

As a child, I knew when I died, I'd probably be buried in a piano box. The fire brigade would show up at my trailer and cut me out of my bathroom where I had died on the toilet of a massive heart attack. I was on my first diet at eight, and was officially morbidly obese by the time I was 14.

Great description—morbidly obese. I hated those words. It literally means deathly fat. I was in Overeaters Anonymous for a while and I did the fearless moral inventory which included a tally of all the major weight losses and gains in my life. I had lost around 1,250 pounds, and gained around 1,450 pounds in my lifetime. In 2006 I completed college. I had gained all my OA weight back and was pushing 330lbs again. I looked into a gastric bypass. I binged during the months before surgery and reached 360lbs by the day of surgery. I lost 180lbs by 2009. Then I gained 20lbs, and plateaued out at 200lbs. I knew I had to quit fighting myself and the scale. I had to focus on being healthy.

Long Beach had a Roller Derby League at the time. They offered open team workouts, so I went. Kim B., the woman leading the workout, is a champion gymnast and Crossfit competitor. She has college degrees in physical education and training. I decided to attend her Badass Hour at a local park. I showed up, feeling like a donkey at the Kentucky Derby. Everyone was dressed in tiny shorts and skintight capri workout pants. I was in baggy sweats and a huge cotton t-shirt.

Lesson One: Buy good workout clothes. Crappy couch wear doesn’t work. It hampers your movements, hides your achievements, and the spandex helps hold stuff down.

I cringed at the sight of these toned sweaty people. It was hard to throw down my yoga mat in front of my classmates for the first time. No one belittled my efforts. They stood and clapped when I made it back from the running circuits. No one ever complained when I took longer to finish. I got countless high fives. Finally, I realized the only ugliness was in my head. No one noticed when I lowered out of plank, paused to catch my breath, or tripped on my own shoelaces. They were struggling with themselves.

Lesson Two: You’re only competing with one person—you. Don’t judge yourself against others. And BE NICE to yourself. Even thinking nasty self-criticizing thoughts weakens you. Fight back. Reply to your inner critic. Be your own advocate. Healthy brain=healthy body.

I had moments of fear and shame all the time. Fear that I if I box jumped onto a bench I’d trip and knock my teeth out, shame that I couldn’t jump rope without tripping every 15 reps or peeing my pants just a smidge around 50 reps. I remember during a circuit throwing a jump rope and stalking off to compose myself. I cried in frustration. It was so hard to be a beginner, and to struggle to master skills I should have mastered as a child. The next day I bought a jump rope.

Lesson Three: Always wear black or highly patterned pants. When you hit the ground hard, you will most likely pee your pants just a little. If you don’t-you’re not trying hard enough. You will get a manky sweaty butt stripe. It happens—get over it and keep going.

Kim told us there was a challenge coming up. Tough Mudder: 10 miles, 21 obstacles. My friends at class told me I could do it. I attended Sunday workouts. I worked harder than I have ever worked in my life. Kim would tell us what we would do during the workout. I snorted and would laugh.

“Okay. Sure.”

And then I would proceed to do it. I would do it and do it hard, and I was amazed every time. The first time I climbed an 8-foot wooden wall I squealed in fear. I would have been embarrassed if I hadn’t been consumed in trying not to fall. My friend Brian was at the top of the wall with me grinning, and giving me thumbs up. I dropped to the other side and was euphoric.

Lesson Four: Don’t assume you know your limits. You are way more awesome and dynamic than you give yourself credit for. It’s okay to be afraid, it’s okay to laugh in disbelief, but it’s not okay to not try. Push yourself—be your own superhero.

I was more terrified on the day of the race than I had ever been of anything in my life. I’d worked my butt off to get there. I’d never done anything like this before, and when I had told people I was doing Tough Mudder they looked horrified. We started up the first obstacle/hill, lovingly called the Death March. Everyone pulled ahead. I was slogging toward a churning dust cloud of people lighter, stronger, and faster than me. And that was how my day went. Falling further and further back.

After weeping four times on the Cliffhanger, I eventually made it to the top. There I decided there was no way I was walking off this course. I wanted my cheesy free t-shirt, and horrid orange headband. I crossed the finish line with the last two competitors on the field, 2.5 hours after my team crossed. The bands and crowds had gone home. The beer garden was closed. The parking lot was empty. My husband sat on a big rock near the finish line, with my friends. He hugged me hard.

A week later I was sitting at a coffee shop with my yoga girlfriends. I was talking about how disappointed I was with being last, how terrified I was of the water obstacles, and how mad I was at my workout crew for telling me I was ready. I was a mess!

My friend Alyssa shushed me. She took me to task for undercutting my achievement, for comparing myself to others, and for not considering all the people who quit mid-race or didn’t even show up. She assured me that I had been out of my league, but then she told me something I think of every time I think I’m out of my league.

Lesson Five: Always play out of your league. How will you get any better if you don’t challenge yourself?

My New Favorite Blends

 I usually like to blend my own oils, but occasionally I stumble across new blends that I just fall in love with. The new brand I'm into is Nature's Truth. I found it in some weird off brand grocery store near my house. I read the side of it, and was like "sounds good" then tossed it in my basket. It turned out to be better than good, and I bought multiple scents from this brand off Amazon.

One body=2-3 tlbs of carrier oil, and 8-12 drops of essential oil.

Thrive was the first blend I got. It reminded me of the Narayan gel I use on you guys all the time. It's a warming sport blend. I always add refined coconut oil as a carrier. It really eases that after workout ache.

Thrive (cleansing):

  • Clove oil- antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, soothes the digestive tract, warming to the skin
  • Lemon oil- improves respiration, circulation, and skin toning.
  • Eucalyptus oil- decongestant and antiseptic, warming for the skin
  • Rosemary oil- aids digestion, pain relief, improves memory
Well, after that blend worked so well I bought another that sounded good-Calming. People loved it! It should be nicknamed KnockOut Drops, because everyone I use it on is snoring 10 minutes into the massage. It is a dreamy blend, deeply sedating.

Calming (relaxing):

  • Orange oil- diuretic, eliminates toxins, relieves anxiety
  • Tangerine oil- rejuvenates skin, sedative, relieves stomach acid problems 
  • Ylang Ylang oil- relieves anxiety and irritability, 
  • Patchouli oil- decongestant, anti-depressant
  • Blue chamomile oil- pain relief, anti-inflammatory, sedative 
The latest blend I ordered was Happiness. I didn't like the overwhelming spearmint scent when I opened the bottle, but this blend is like a fine wine, you have to let it breathe a little. Once it opens up and the cedar wood blends in with the spearmint and lemon, oh child! Love this stuff. Would go great in an atomizer, or in a carrier oil for application after your shower. I usually roll my eyes when someone describes a scent as "uplifting", but I can absolutely say this does have an uplifting effect on your mood. Not super sleepy, just chill.

Happiness (energizing):

  • Cedar wood oil- cleansing, anti-cellulite, anti-anxiety
  • Lemon oil- sedative, diuretic, anti-depressant
  • Spearmint oil- antiseptic, disinfectant, relaxing to digestive tract, calming
  • Grapefruit oil- antioxidant, disinfectant, antidepressant, boosts metabolism
  • Tangerine oil- anti-spasmodic (coughs, muscle cramps, nervous tics), balances acid and bile in the stomach
  • Myrtle oil- astringent, sedative, fights wrinkles
  • Nutmeg oil- lowers blood pressure, relieves menstrual cramps
  • Jasmine absolute oil- anti-depressant, sedative, anti-spasmodic

Hot and Spicy: Herbal Compresses Turns Humans to Putty!


I've been staring at them in catalogs for months. I finally broke down and bought the whole kit. I added them to the menu, but I really hadn't had a chance to promote them. I love them. They become a whole other layer of massage to add to your experience. The heat from them is like the hot stone massage, but the lung expanding scent of camphor and lime is dreamy.

What is an herbal compress?

It is a bundle of aromatic herbs that is wrapped in cheesecloth, sewn into a tight ball then steamed until super hot. When it's ready, your therapist warms your skin by holding the hot compress in their hand then transferring the heat to your skin. When you're ready, the compress is dabbed firmly along the energy lines of your arms in legs. The heat is applied to the large muscles of shoulders, back, and thighs.

The combination of herbs used is the same Thai recipe that has been used by healers for centuries.

  • Ginger Phrai: anti-inflammatory, esp. for bronchial/lung issues, toning and antiseptic for skin, soothes sprains and inflamed joints.
  • Lemongrass Ta Khrai: anti-inflammatory, helps sprains, bruises, and sore muscles
  • Tumeric Khamin: cleansing effect that speeds healing of skin, antiseptic properties help heal bruises, joint pain, sprains, or muscle pain.
  • Kaffir Lime Ma Kurt: the leaves are a common home treatment for colds and congestion. It's astringent, cleansing, and healing for skin.
  • Camphor Ga Ra Boon: this is a gum from tree bark. It's the oil in cough drops that boosts the menthol to a nasal wasabi level. It stimulates and dilates the the respiratory system, and also soothes anxiety and insomnia. Heals bruises and promotes healthy skin growth.
  • Tamarind Ma Khaam: antiseptic and astringent for the skin. 
I learned this treatment a decade ago, when I worked at Complexions Spa in Seal Beach. This training led me to take Thai table massage a few years later at California College of Physical Arts. I love the assisted stretching/yoga aspect of it. The gentle rocking, and measured pressure along designated energy lines really take the massage to an alpha/spiritual space. 

Until you experience it, you'll never know the floating feeling you get when you have relaxed past caring. It can't be described. You are there, you can hear me, feel me move around the room, but you're floating, lucid dreaming, snoring, and belly-breathing unconsciously. 

 When it's done right it is amazing. 

I know a lot of you are going to get more physical now that summer is here, and with that comes a lot of soreness. I highly recommend adding them to your massage. They are bone-meltingly relaxing.

How To Body Brush

How to body brush and why you should be doing it regularly. 

Body brushing is a centuries old simple health regimen. A dry brush is used to lightly brush the skin, bringing a blush of fresh blood circulation to the surface. This loosens dead skin cells, and the oxygen rich blood and nutrients feed the new skin cells, toning the skin and keeping it healthy. It moves the lymph to the glands located in armpits and groin, reducing edema and clearing metabolic debris from the body. It's like drinking water, or getting enough sleep. Simple, yet effective in boosting your health.

Do this in parts.
Lower/Upper-Left/Right-Front/Back,
three rows for each limb,
Outer/Middle/Inner.
  • Start Ankle to knee, brush 3 times upward with light brisk strokes outer part of leg then middle then inner. Move up to the knee and brush up the thigh, do the same. Angle the strokes toward your groin. Brush up the back of the leg in the same pattern.Then do the same to your other leg.
  • Lightly draw a clockwise circle(right to left) 3 times around your abdomen, starting at the upper right side across to upper left, down to the groin sweeping across the lower abdomen then back up to the upper right.                       
  • Brush from wrist to elbow 3 times in 3 rows, brush elbow to armpit 3 times in 3 rows then brush upward from your hip 3 times, across your outer ribs, straight to your armpit, you can brush the underside and top of your breast, sweeping toward closest armpit. If you have had lymph glands removed from any area, always sweep away from that set of glands. Ask someone who does MLD to show you the pattern to sweep away from those areas. 

This is best done in the morning right before your shower. You'll wake up your body and get the juices flowing. You should feel a nice tingly buzz on the skin after you're done. 

Don't scrub! This isn't to exfoliate, it's to flush fluids from your dermal layers to cleansing organs and ultimately out of your body. 

Always keep your brush dry, if you keep it in the shower it will get manky within a month.

To clean your brush wash it in Dawn dishwashing liquid, preferably anti bacterial, and then let it dry in the sun. Simple and keeps you simply beautiful.

Twilight: Ultimate Relaxation During Your Massage

Welcome to my first massage blog!

It's not my first ever, but it's the first time I've written for my massage practice. I'm so excited! My first subject to address: Relaxing into it.

Some of my clients ask me what I consider the best compliment. I say snoring. If I've managed to knock you unconscious with massage, I've succeeded.

I call this Twilight.

You're here, but not really. You can hear me moving around the room, feel me picking up your arm, tucking the sheet around you, but you are floating, having waking dreams, slipping in and out your unconscious, healing yourself.

It is called an alpha state. You're breathing deepens, and gets more regular. Your limbs go limp and twitch as your nervous system gears down. In yoga it is called corpse pose. You lay flat out, palms out, feet turned outward. 

This is when your best healing occurs. 
This is massage gold. 

There are levels to the benefits you receive with massage. The first levels are more physical and gained by one time massage(after 90 days, it has officially been forever since you had a massage). Your range of motion is improved, your skin is moisturized and toned with the squeezing and stroking of your dermal layers. Adhesions are broken down, scars are softened.

The secondary levels affect the systems of the body. Your circulatory and lymph systems are pumped, pools of metabolic waste are pushed along to be flushed out by your urinary system, calcium deposits and deeper scar tissue is broken up and re-absorbed by the body. Long standing injuries, and structural issues are addressed and restored to balance. These are reached with repeat massage, at least once a month for six months.

The third deeper levels are harder to reach. They touch us on emotional levels, and heal the nervous system. The deeper levels address chronic pain, abuse issues, PTSD, and a whole host of other psychological/pain management issues. 

This is the massage gold I dig for. It comes with viewing massage as an accompanying therapy for pain management teams. This is where massage is done weekly or every two weeks.

I always talk to my clients before their massage to find out what they need. When people are used to meditation and massage, they hop on the table, and instantly begin to sink into their alpha state.
Some of my more anxious clients keep chatting, because it calms them. I'm happy to listen and laugh with them. But I'm always thrilled when they quiet down to the point they reach the Twilight. I see it by the rise and fall of their chest, the limpness of their limbs, and the twitching of their hands and feet. 

They're floating.

They're healing.

They're are lucid dreaming.

And while their mind is unspooling and releasing the digital assault we all undergo on a daily basis, their body systems are re-booting, and healing them.

We are all sleep deprived, and most are caffeine driven. Your liver flushes and cleans blood at night. Your pancreas, spleen, and gall bladder replenishes their hormones to help with your digestion. All these systems are affected by stress and lack of sleep. Most of the systems are already compromised by daily life and medications.

Massage gives your body the space and time to do important work. When your reach that Twilight moment, relax into it, and know that you are receiving the most important benefit of massage. Inner peace and healing.

When you feel your heart slow on the table, close your eyes, get comfortable.

 Don't worry about me. I'm focused on untangling your muscles, and smoothing your fascia.

You focus on you. 

Let your thoughts drift past, don't latch onto anything, don't plan what you are going to do after, don't make lists, just watch your thoughts swirl away and marvel you keep so much in your head. 

Let go. 

Let go of everything, relax your neck, your arms, your legs. 

Be warm, be safe.

Drift. 

You'll reach the Twilight.
